Fridge smell after a power cut, defrosting or moving: what to throw out, what to clean and what to do next.

Short answer: a fridge that smells after a power cut, after standing switched off, after defrosting or after a move usually has one of four causes: food that went off while it was warm, juices or meltwater left in drawers, seals or the drain tray, mould that grew in a closed, damp cabinet, or odour that has soaked into the plastic. Throw out anything unsafe first, then clean and dry every part and air the fridge with the door open. An odour remover only helps after that.
A fridge does not need a storm to go warm. In the UAE, a fridge switched off over a long summer trip, or carried across town when you move flat, can smell as bad as one hit by a power outage. This guide covers those four situations, using the US Department of Agriculture's food-safety rules and the fridge makers' own instructions. For the general cleaning method and the odour absorbers you can put in a fridge, read PRO TECHnology's guide to getting rid of fridge smell; this page deals with what is different after time without power.
| When it started | What usually smells | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| After a power cut | Perishable food that warmed up; juices from thawed meat or fish | Check how long it was off, then throw out unsafe food |
| After standing switched off or unplugged | Mould and stale, damp air in a closed cabinet | Empty, clean and dry it, then leave the door open |
| After defrosting | Water left inside, the drain tray, food that thawed | Dry the inside and empty and clean the drain tray |
| After moving house | Food or water left in during the move, a door kept shut, the smell of a newly installed fridge | Clean and dry it, and let it stand upright before you switch it on |
Fridge smell after a power outage: what to throw out first
The smell is a warning about the food before it is a cleaning job. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says a fridge keeps food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage if you keep the door closed, and a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full). FoodSafety.gov, the US government's food-safety site, tells you to discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers after 4 hours without power, and its chart says to discard most perishables that have been at 4 °C (40 °F) or above for more than 2 hours.
| Without power, door kept closed | USDA guidance |
|---|---|
| Fridge | Food stays safe for up to 4 hours |
| Full freezer | Holds its temperature for about 48 hours |
| Half-full freezer | Holds its temperature for about 24 hours |
| Perishable food at 4 °C or above for more than 2 hours | Discard (meat, fish, milk, soft cheese, cut fruit, cooked rice and leftovers) |
| Frozen food that still has ice crystals, or is at 4 °C or below | Can be refrozen, though quality may suffer |
- Never taste food to check it. The USDA's rule is "When in doubt, throw it out", and anything with an unusual odour, colour or texture goes.
- Look for drips. Thawed meat, chicken and fish leak juices into drawers and onto the shelves below; the USDA says to discard foods such as bread or salad greens that those juices may have touched.
- Check the temperature. The USDA advises keeping an appliance thermometer in both the fridge and the freezer, with the fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or below and the freezer at -18 °C (0 °F) or below.
- Then clean. Take out the shelves and drawers, wash them, and wash the inside, including the door seals. The USDA's odour steps "may have to be repeated several times".
Fridge smells after being switched off or unplugged
A fridge left switched off with its door shut is dark, warm and damp inside, which suits mould. Samsung's advice for owners leaving on a long trip, if the fridge has no Vacation Mode, is to remove all food and ice, unplug it, wipe the inside to remove excess moisture and leave the doors open to avoid mould or odours. Where a Samsung fridge does have Vacation Mode, it keeps the freezer running and sets the fridge to 15 °C, which Samsung says is meant for trips longer than three weeks and is not safe for storing food.
- Before you leave: empty it, clean it, dry it, and prop the door open.
- If you come back to a shut fridge that smells: treat it like a power cut. Throw out the food, clean every removable part, and air it with the door open. Samsung suggests emptying a fridge and ventilating it for 8 to 10 hours when a smell has got into it.
- If it still smells after cleaning, Nebraska Extension suggests trays of activated charcoal or baking soda on the shelves while the fridge runs empty for 2 or 3 days.
- If the fridge was off for several days, Nebraska Extension warns the odour may have gone into the insulation; if meat or fish drippings leaked into it, a refrigerator technician may have to remove the liner and replace the insulation.
Fridge smells after defrosting
Manual defrosting leaves water behind, and a damp fridge smells. Beko's steps are to switch off and unplug, move the food to a cool bag, take out the drawers and shelves, put bowls of hot water inside with towels and a container for the meltwater, and let the ice melt on its own without sharp tools. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth while it defrosts, and dry the inside before you switch it back on, which Beko says prevents ice building up again. Use or discard any food that has defrosted.
Then check the drain tray. Samsung tells owners to take out the shelves, bins and drain tray and clean them, and to empty any water in the drain tray down the sink. Where the tray sits, and whether you can reach it, depends on the model, so check your manual. Frost-free models defrost themselves: Beko notes that they do not need manual defrosting.
Fridge smells after moving house
A fridge carried with food or water inside, or kept closed in a truck or a storeroom, arrives with the same damp, stale smell as one left switched off. Empty, defrost and dry it before the move, keep the door slightly open while it waits, and clean it again when it arrives. Samsung's Gulf support page says to clean the inside with warm water and dishwashing liquid and dry every surface before you use it.
Do not switch it on the moment it is in place. Samsung says a fridge moved upright should stand for at least 2 to 3 hours before you plug it in, a fridge moved on its side should be turned upright and left for at least 4 hours, and one exposed to extreme temperatures during transport needs longer. Beko says at least four hours upright and unplugged, so the compressor oil can settle. Times vary by maker and model, so follow your manual. Samsung also says a newly installed fridge may give off a smell at first and that this is not a fault, and suggests not using it for at least 2 hours.
Fridge still smells after cleaning?
Then something was missed, or the smell is deeper than the surface. Check the door seals, the drain tray, the underside of the drawers and the shelf runners, and clean again: the USDA expects its odour steps may need repeating several times. Rinse off cleaning products as well, and check your manual before using bleach: the USDA's method uses a dilute bleach rinse, while Samsung tells owners of its fridges to avoid harsh chemicals such as benzene, thinner or Clorox. Leave the door open so the fridge can air before you restock it.
If the smell survives several rounds, Nebraska Extension says it may be in the insulation, which is a job for a refrigerator technician, and the USDA says that if odours still remain, the unit may need to be discarded. Where Shelfy and Deo fit, once the fridge is clean
Neither replaces throwing out unsafe food or cleaning. Vitesy itself says Shelfy's results may vary significantly and that it is not a safeguard against foodborne illness or spoilage. What they can do is help keep a clean fridge smelling clean afterwards.

- Vitesy Shelfy is a rechargeable fridge purifier. A small fan draws the fridge air through a washable ceramic filter coated with a photocatalyst, activated by 12 blue LEDs, with no ozone and no UV; Vitesy says it acts on the air inside the fridge, not directly on the food. In Vitesy's lab tests on the original, white-LED model, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) given off by ripening apples and avocados in a 370-litre fridge at 4 °C were 80% lower after 5 hours, and trimethylamine, the fishy smell, fell 73% in 5 hours in a 118-litre box. Vitesy recommends one Shelfy per about 300 litres and two above 350 litres. Its Vitesy Hub app shows the fridge temperature and door openings (Shelfy also works without the app), but keep the appliance thermometer the USDA recommends as well. To check whether it works in your own fridge, PRO TECHnology explains how to test a fridge purifier at home.
- Vitesy Deo needs no power. Vitesy says its ceramic catalytic filter breaks odour molecules down into carbon dioxide and water. In Vitesy's test report, trimethylamine fell from 2.19 mg/m³ to below the 0.01 mg/m³ detection limit within 2 hours in a sealed 60-litre box. In a home, Vitesy's FAQ says a reduction can usually be noticed within 72 hours, and its buyer test guide says Deo may reduce odours significantly without necessarily eliminating them. Use one per fridge, and let the fridge dry and cool first: Vitesy says condensation or high humidity can temporarily reduce Deo's efficiency.
| After-care | Vitesy Shelfy | Vitesy Deo |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Fan, ceramic photocatalytic filter, 12 blue LEDs | Passive ceramic catalytic filter |
| Power | Rechargeable battery, USB-C (bring your own 5 V adapter) | None |
| Upkeep | Rinse the filter about once a month; recharge about every 3 weeks in Eco mode | Wipe with a slightly damp cloth; never rinse |
| How many | 1 per about 300 litres; 2 above 350 litres | 1 per fridge |
| Also designed for | Keeping fruit and vegetables fresh for longer | Shoe cabinets, wardrobes, cupboards |
Shelfy is also designed to help fruit and vegetables last longer: PRO TECHnology explains how in its guide to keeping fruit and vegetables fresh for longer. For shoe cabinets and wardrobes, see our guide to odour eliminators for shoe cabinets, wardrobes and cars.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a fridge be without power before the food goes bad?
Up to 4 hours if you keep the door closed, according to the USDA. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 hours. Perishable food that has been at 4 °C or above for more than 2 hours should be thrown out.
Why does my fridge smell after a power outage?
Because perishable food warmed up and began to spoil, and thawed meat or fish may have dripped into the drawers. Throw out unsafe food first, never taste it to check, then wash the shelves, drawers, inside walls and door seals, and air the fridge with the door open.
Why does my fridge smell after being switched off?
Because a closed fridge with no power stays damp and warm inside, which lets mould and stale smells build up. Before a long trip, Samsung advises owners of fridges without Vacation Mode to empty and unplug the fridge, wipe out the moisture and leave the doors open.
Why does my fridge smell after defrosting?
Usually because water was left inside, the drain tray holds old water, or food thawed while it was off. Dry the inside before you switch it back on, as Beko advises, and take out, empty and clean the drain tray, as Samsung advises.
How long should a fridge stand before you switch it on after moving?
Samsung says at least 2 to 3 hours if it was moved upright and at least 4 hours if it was moved on its side; Beko says at least four hours upright and unplugged. Times vary by maker, so follow your fridge's manual, and allow longer if it was exposed to extreme heat in transport.
Why does my fridge still smell after cleaning?
A part was probably missed, such as the door seals or the drain tray, or the smell has gone into the plastic or insulation. Clean again, air it with the door open, and run it empty with activated charcoal or baking soda for 2 or 3 days. If the smell still remains, it may be in the insulation, which is a job for a refrigerator technician.
Can a fridge purifier or odour eliminator fix the smell after a power cut?
Not on its own. Throw out unsafe food and clean and dry the fridge first. After that, Vitesy Deo or Shelfy can help keep it fresh, but Vitesy says Shelfy is not a safeguard against foodborne illness or spoilage, and Deo may reduce odours significantly without necessarily eliminating them.
Where can I buy Shelfy or Vitesy Deo in the UAE?
From PRO TECHnology in Dubai, which distributes Vitesy; EVO does not sell it yet. PRO TECHnology expects the first Vitesy shipment by 20 November 2026, and you can reserve Shelfy or Deo now on the PRO TECHnology Vitesy page, with no payment online.
